Background[]

Forget footwork. This Japanese dance trio uses their hands to captivate you. Meet XTRAP , a troupe that specializes in “finger tutting,” a style of dance that involves intricate hand movements.

Taylor Swift featured it in her “Shake It Off” video, but these finger-tutters have been at it since 2015 in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan.

Finger-tutting is a sub-genre of tutting – the popping style based on angular movements meant to invoke the two-dimensional poses in ancient Egyptian relief art.

XTRAP’s members – ZANGE, NARI, and RYOGA – began developing a style of finger-tutting in which they synchronized their finger movements in a tight circle. When they realized how much the effect looked like a kaleidoscope, their manager Yoshio Horyen started shooting videos of the group’s performances in extreme close-up. And XTRAP’s signature style of the “Finger Kaleidoscope” was born.

The crew’s videos have been widely broadcast throughout Japan, earning them a large following especially from dancers and students. A curated playlist of their best clips has amassed over 37 million cumulative views on Facebook.

They’ve also developed a popular live act, performing between 50 and 60 shows per year. Horyen’s visual and cinematic talents have given rise to a dynamic multimedia production. In it, the audience simultaneously observes the intensity from the artists on stage while their mesmerizing imagery is projected onto a large screen behind them.

Horyen even designed precise motion graphics that complement the crew members’ movements when superimposed over them, elevating the experience to a dazzling new level.

The group has also begun traveling to the U.S. to compete in finger-tutting competitions, and they recently filmed a television appearance in Rome. Their goal is to mount a Las Vegas residency in 2018. [1]

They recently appeared on the second season of Asia’s got Talent, where they were eliminated in the Semifinals.

Preliminary[]

XTRAP's performance in Episode BC04 consisted of the trio performing a finger dancing routine with black lighting. They moved their fingers in different ways, styles, and patterns. Judges Mike, Saf, Pennies, and Fresh gave the group standing ovations. However, their performance was not strong enough for the judges to send them to Judge Cuts, eliminating them from the competition along with Geometrie Variable, instead of Alex Dowis. However, Saf decided to use his save on them, advancing them to Judge Cuts.

Judge Cuts[]

XTRAP's performance in Episode BC07 consisted of the group performing a small scale finger dancing routine, projection their hands and fingers onto a larger screen. They used light and shadows to display their fingers in a variety of patterns. Judges Mike, Saf and Pennies gave them standing ovations. Their performance was not strong enough for the judges to send them to the Quarterfinals, eliminating them from the competition.
